Driving Nowhere is a sorta ‘slice of life’ story about various average folks going about their life. These characters are the kinda people who tend to keep to themselves and socialize largely online. Most of the main characters you’ll see are roughly in their late 20s and a few of them happen to have a disability too. If you like videogames, virtual reality, motorsport, and general nerdity… then you might enjoy following this little comic.
Layne Weller:
Works and lives in a loft above Heinonen Motorsports as an all-in-one retail worker, mechanic, etc. Layne has a huge personal interest in motorsport and actually competed as a kid with a successful stint in karting until his disability just made it impossible. Now he scratches that racing itch with sim racing and tinkering with his car. He also plays a bunch of videogames and VR stuff with his friend Mikko. Layne has a friendly personality and unintentionally upsets certain people due to his vocabulary being molded by spending much of his childhood online.
He has Osteogenesis Imperfecta and walks with a cane. His case is middle of the road in severity and other than being rather short it isn’t immediately obvious he’s disabled… aside from his cane.
Mikko Heinonen:
Layne’s friend. Easy going to a fault and isn’t concerned with wealth or success. Technically proficient enough to land a six-figure job, but is plenty happy working freelance as a high-demand programmer a couple of hours a day. Just enough to make a living. The rest of the time he likes to tinker with various hobbies he picks up or just play videogames and hang out online.
While he’s supportive of Layne’s motorsport interests, much like with his father it’s just from a place of polite indifference. He’d much rather experiment with other technical things or take stuff apart and rebuild them for fun. As a result, he’s actually pretty good at being an automotive engineer, even though it’s not something he’s particularly interested in. He chimes in occasionally though as going into the technical depths of motorsport engineering is a great way to bond with his dad. From Layne’s point of view it’s like they’re talking another language… well other than Finnish. Of which Mikko can speak thanks to his father.
Also, he has a bit of a secret love for kpop…
Leo Heinonen:
Mikko’s father. Originally from Finland and immigrated from Europe in the 80’s as an engineer for the Quattro program when Audi brought it stateside. Ended up meeting Mikko’s mother and after a few years moved to be near her and started his Heinonen Motorsports business. While he’s typically quite generous and kind, he has a gruff exterior and is a man of few words. Partially because his English isn’t the best…
